Remembering the Scorching 1976 Drought and Standpipe Struggles

The summer of 1976 was one of the most memorable and challenging times for people living in south-west England and the Channel Islands. Starting on June 23, the region experienced a long period of extreme heat and almost no rain. The UK Met Office described it as one of the driest and hottest summers ever recorded. In towns like Tavistock, Devon, residents had to rely on standpipes set up in the streets to get their daily water. Families would wait in line with buckets and containers, sometimes sharing water with their neighbors. The drought was so severe that rivers and reservoirs dropped to very low levels, and even occasional rain did not help much.

Farmers struggled to keep their animals fed because the grass in the fields had turned brown and dry. In Jersey, the drought lasted for 39 days without any rain, which was the longest period of absolute drought ever recorded there. Farmers and hotel owners were told to cut their water use by a quarter or they could face prosecution. People were encouraged to save water in any way they could, such as sharing bath water or using it to water their gardens.
