Romani Art Shines Bright: Challenging Stereotypes at London Docklands

The London Museum Docklands has launched a new exhibition called By Appointment Only, which celebrates the creativity and resilience of Britain's Romani communities. The exhibition features the work of three British Romani artists, each using their art to challenge stereotypes and encourage a deeper understanding of Romani culture. The display is vibrant and thought-provoking, with pieces that reflect both personal memories and shared histories. One of the first things visitors notice is a mannequin dressed in a striking red dress covered in ribbons and circular patches, standing beside a glass case filled with glittery red shoes and colorful socks. These items are not just beautiful; they represent the unique style and traditions of Romani people.

Romani communities have been part of British history since the early 1500s, but they have often faced discrimination. Even in the 1990s, it was common to see signs in pubs and restaurants saying 'No travellers or gypsies allowed. ' Eventually, these signs changed to 'Travellers by appointment only,' which inspired the name of the exhibition. The artists hope their work will help break down barriers and show the strength and creativity of Romani people.

Corrina Eastwood, one of the artists and co-curators, describes working on the exhibition as a deeply personal and professional journey. Her piece, Sugar Coated, is inspired by her heritage and memories of her late father. She uses soft, peach-colored materials and pearls, and even includes 3D-printed casts of her father's hands. Another artist, Delaine Le Bas, created Tap Your Heels Together Three Times, which explores themes of belonging, gender, and modern life. Le Bas draws on her family's history and Romani traditions like rag-and-bone dealing, where people collected unwanted items to recycle. Dan Turner, the third artist, examines the relationship between Romani and mainstream British culture, highlighting traditional crafts that Romani people once sold door to door.

In addition to the artwork, the exhibition features a film called Searching for Romani Gypsy Heritage, made by award-winning filmmaker John-Henry Phillips. The film traces the history of Romani communities from 500AD to 2022, offering a broader perspective on their journey. The exhibition is housed in the Reflections Room on the second floor of the museum, and admission is free. Corrina Eastwood describes the space as a 'beautifully human alternative' for recognizing important, often overlooked histories. The museum hopes that visitors will leave with a greater appreciation for Romani culture and the stories behind the art.
