Boeing, one of the world’s largest airplane manufacturers, is facing new challenges as more than three thousand of its defense workers have gone on strike. These workers, who are based in Missouri and Illinois, are responsible for building military aircraft such as the F-15 fighter jet. The strike began after union members rejected Boeing’s latest offer, which included changes to pay, work schedules, and pension plans. The workers, represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), say they are fighting for respect, dignity, and fair treatment, not just promises from the company.

Dan Gillian, vice president of Boeing’s Air Dominance unit, expressed disappointment that the employees turned down an offer that would have given them an average wage increase of forty percent. Despite this, the workers felt the offer did not address all their concerns. The IAM union, which represents about six hundred thousand workers in industries like aerospace and shipbuilding, is leading the strike from its local branch in St. Louis, where Boeing’s defense manufacturing hub is located. This is the first time since 1996 that Boeing’s defense business has experienced a walkout, and the last one lasted more than three months.

Boeing has been struggling with a series of setbacks in recent years. The company has faced safety issues, including two deadly crashes involving its 737 aircraft. In 2018, a Boeing 737 crashed in Indonesia, killing all 189 people on board. A few months later, another crash killed 157 people. In 2024, a panel on a Boeing 737 Max came off during a flight, raising more concerns about the company’s safety standards. These incidents have damaged Boeing’s reputation and led to a decrease in the number of planes delivered to customers, with last year’s output being the lowest since the pandemic.

Despite the current strike, Boeing’s chief executive, Kelly Ortberg, has tried to downplay its impact. He pointed out that this strike is much smaller than the one last year, which involved around thirty thousand workers who build passenger jets and cost the company billions of dollars. Ortberg said, 'I wouldn’t worry too much about the implications of the strike. We’ll manage our way through that.

The striking workers hope that their actions will lead to better pay, improved working conditions, and more secure pensions. They believe that standing together and refusing to work is the best way to make their voices heard. As the strike continues, both Boeing and the union will need to negotiate to find a solution that works for everyone. The outcome of this strike could have a big impact on Boeing’s future and on the workers who help build some of the world’s most advanced military aircraft.
