Norwich Uni's Virtual Studio Revolutionizes UK Filmmaking with Mind-Blowing Tech

Norwich University of the Arts has recently opened a state-of-the-art virtual production studio that is expected to change the way films and television shows are made in the UK. The studio features a massive video wall that can display any background, making it look like actors or presenters are in different locations, even though they are actually inside a hangar in Norwich. This technology, developed in partnership with Sony and Target 3D, is being described by students as 'insane' because of the new possibilities it offers for creative projects.

Professor Ben Stopher, the incoming vice chancellor at NUA, believes the studio represents a new direction for film production worldwide. He says that having access to this cutting-edge technology will help students develop important skills and prepare them for future careers in the industry. The virtual set is similar to the one used in popular shows like The Mandalorian, where actors perform in front of realistic digital backgrounds. For the studio's launch, the set was transformed into a desert scene with a rally car, all created by the video wall. Professor Stopher points out that this method is much more efficient than traditional location filming, as it allows for more ambitious settings without the need to travel.

Students like April Ward are excited about the opportunities the studio provides. She says it opens up 'so many possibilities' and is a huge deal for her and her classmates. Elliot Marris, a production workflow specialist from Sony Europe, helped set up the studio and explains that the technology allows everyone on set to see and interact with the virtual environment, unlike the old green screen method. He adds that the systems are complex and require skill to operate, but they offer exciting job prospects for students. The studio is located next to NUA's immersive visualisation and simulation lab, giving students even more resources to learn and create. With this new studio, Norwich University of the Arts is positioning itself at the forefront of the next generation of filmmaking in the UK.
