Iberian Firms Race to Boost Battery Backup After Massive Blackout Chaos

On April 28, 2025, a major power outage hit Spain and Portugal, leaving both countries in darkness for several hours. People had to find lanterns and old radios to get by, and many businesses faced serious problems. One of the companies affected was Fribin, a meat processing firm in Spain. Their production lines stopped suddenly, and they had to throw away a lot of meat that was being processed. Andrés Altabás, the technology director at Fribin, said their emergency systems could not keep everything running, so they had to focus on keeping the refrigerators on. The company lost hundreds of thousands of euros because of the blackout. After this experience, Fribin decided to invest in battery backup systems. They bought two large battery modules, spending about 1. 5 million euros, with some help from the European Union. Now, they feel more prepared if another blackout happens.

Across Europe, many companies are switching from fossil fuels to electricity to help reduce pollution. However, this also makes them more vulnerable to power cuts. In Spain and Portugal, the blackout made companies realize they needed better backup plans. Miguel Matias, who runs an energy company called Self Energy, said that factories need backup power so their machines do not get damaged during outages. In Portugal, another power cut happened in January, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without electricity or phone service for weeks. Because of these problems, companies are investing more in battery storage. In Spain, the amount of battery storage has increased a lot since last year, and the government is giving money to help companies buy more batteries.

Battery suppliers are seeing more demand, and customers want better technology. For example, they want batteries that can switch on instantly if the power goes out, which is important for places like hospitals and data centers. Companies also want batteries delivered quickly because of deadlines for government funding. In Portugal, Vista Alegre, a famous porcelain maker, installed batteries to protect their production lines. They also found that having batteries lets them sell extra energy back to the grid. Primus Ceramics, another company, used a diesel generator during the blackout and is now adding more batteries to store solar energy. Their boss, Paulo Almeida, said the blackout was stressful, but they managed to keep things running. Now, many companies in Spain and Portugal are investing in batteries to make sure they can keep working, even if the power goes out again.
