Collect Stamps and Speak Manx: Isle of Man’s Fun Language Passport Adventure!
On the Isle of Man, a creative new project is encouraging people to use and enjoy the Manx language in their daily lives. The Mannin Aboo Passport Scheme, organized by Culture Vannin, invites people to collect stamps in a colorful passport booklet by visiting different attractions and using simple Manx phrases. There are 18 stamps to collect, and each one is earned by saying a Manx word or greeting at a participating location. The booklets are bright turquoise and reddish pink, with the words 'mannin aboo' in bold white letters, which means 'hurray for the Isle of Man' in Manx.
The scheme is part of the Year of the Manx Language, a celebration designed to make the language more visible and accessible. Throughout the summer, people can pick up a passport booklet and start collecting stamps by visiting shops, cultural sites, and food and drink venues. Each booklet includes useful Manx phrases and pronunciation guides, making it easy for anyone to try speaking the language, even if they are beginners. The goal is to make hearing and using Manx feel normal and enjoyable, not intimidating. Tiffany Kerruish, the project coordinator, says that hearing greetings like 'moghrey mie' for 'good morning' or 'gura mie ayd' for 'thank you' in real-life settings will help everyone feel more comfortable using Manx words.
The passports are divided into three categories: shop, culture, and food and drink. Once someone collects all 18 stamps, they can return their completed passport to Culture Vannin and enter a prize draw in the autumn. Prizes include vouchers for the Isle of Man Steam Packet, tickets for heritage experiences, Manx-themed jewelry, and free cakes and coffees from participating venues. Organizers hope that more businesses will join the scheme as passport destinations during the summer. The project is open to everyone, whether they are fluent speakers or just curious about the language. By making Manx a part of everyday life, the Mannin Aboo Passport Scheme aims to celebrate what makes the Isle of Man special and unique for both residents and visitors.
