The Environment Agency has issued a warning to holidaymakers visiting Devon and Cornwall, urging them to be aware of the potential risks of flash floods. They recommend that anyone near rivers and streams in these areas should sign up for weather alerts from the Met Office and stay updated on flood warnings. Leonora Hansen, a representative from the Environment Agency, highlighted that the advice provided could be crucial for saving lives. She explained that flash floods are different from the usual flooding caused by rivers overflowing or coastal waters rising. 'Flash floods can happen very quickly and unexpectedly,' she stated. 'We want people to be aware of the signs that indicate a serious risk of flash flooding, such as intense rainfall over a short period. ' The agency's warning comes as a reminder of the devastating flash floods that struck Boscastle, Cornwall, in 2004, where over 50 individuals had to be rescued from their homes. This year marks the 20th anniversary of that event, and the Environment Agency, in collaboration with Exeter City Council, is keen to ensure that people are prepared. The campaign encourages holidaymakers to look out for warning signs, including heavy rain and rapidly rising water levels. It is also important for visitors to have a plan in place in case a flash flood occurs and to know the evacuation procedures for their accommodation. 'Before you go on holiday, check if there are any flood warnings in the area you are visiting,' Ms. Hansen advised. 'You should also sign up for Met Office severe weather warnings to stay informed about any thunderstorms or severe weather conditions that may arise. ' By taking these precautions, holidaymakers can help ensure their safety while enjoying their time in beautiful Devon and Cornwall.
