French Bistro Blues: Traditional Eats Struggle Amid Fast Food Frenzy

Across France, traditional bistros and restaurants are closing at a fast rate, and many people are worried about what this means for French culture. Mickael Moureaud, who owns L'Ange Vin on the edge of Angers, says his restaurant is much emptier than it used to be. He remembers when his place would be almost full at lunchtime, but now, most tables are empty. He blames the rising costs of food and supplies, which have gone up by as much as 30 percent in the past year. Instead of raising his prices a lot, he has chosen to make less profit, but even so, he has fewer customers. Some months, he cannot pay himself at all, and he is only able to keep going because his wife has a good job. He loves running his restaurant, and his customers give him good reviews online, but he feels stressed and worried about the future.

The problem is not just in Angers. All over France, small towns that used to have many little restaurants now only have bakeries and fast food places like pizza or kebabs. Traditional French dishes like steak frites or coq au vin are getting harder to find. Statistics show that profits for traditional restaurants have dropped a lot, and nearly 10,000 restaurants closed in just one year. Celine Viale, who runs three restaurants and is a leader in the restaurant owners' union, says that sales are down because fewer people are eating out. Many young people prefer to eat at home or grab something quick and cheap, like a sandwich or fast food. They say that eating in a restaurant is too expensive and takes too much time.

Experts say that the way people eat in France is changing. In 2010, the traditional French meal was added to UNESCO's list of important cultural traditions. This meal is not just about the food, but about sitting together and enjoying several courses with wine. But now, many young people do not eat this way. They want food that is fast, cheap, and easy to share on social media. Some restaurants have tried to adapt by offering cheaper and healthier versions of traditional food, but many small bistros are closing. People worry that soon, only big chain restaurants will survive, and only wealthy people will be able to afford nice meals out. The rest will eat at home or choose fast food. This change makes many people sad because eating in restaurants has always been a special part of life in France.
