This noise comes from the 199 data centres that operate in the area, making Loudoun County the largest hub for data storage and processing in the world, even bigger than China. These data centres are huge buildings filled with computer systems that help run the internet and artificial intelligence. They are important for keeping people connected and for supporting new technology.

The data centres have brought a lot of money and jobs to Loudoun County. They take up about 3 percent of the county’s land and make up 40 percent of its budget. Every year, the data centre industry creates around 74,000 jobs and adds billions of dollars to Virginia’s economy. The county became a popular place for data centres because it has flat, cheap land and a lot of skilled workers. Companies like Amazon and Google were given permission to build their facilities, and the area quickly became known as Data Center Alley.

However, not everyone is happy about the growth of data centres. Residents like Emily Kasabian and Gregory Pirio are worried about how these buildings affect their neighborhoods. Emily was shocked when she saw a sign for a new data centre being built across the street from her home. She moved to the area to get away from data centres, and now she feels like her peaceful neighborhood is being taken over. Gregory Pirio says the noise from the data centre near his house has scared away birds and other wildlife. People are also upset about rising electricity bills, which have gone up by as much as 267 percent in some areas near data centres. While some local leaders and politicians support the growth of data centres because they help the economy and create jobs, others think there should be more rules to protect neighborhoods. Activists like Emily Kasabian are working to slow down or stop new data centre projects, hoping to keep Loudoun County a great place to live. But with more than 1,100 data centres across the US and hundreds more being built, it is a tough battle. Some families may have to decide whether to move if the situation does not improve.
