Join the Festive Fun: Hunt the Wren & Cammag Clash on Isle of Man!

The Isle of Man is well known for its unique and long-standing holiday traditions, especially during the Christmas season. Two of the most cherished events are Hunt the Wren and the Cammag match, both of which bring together people from all over the island. Hunt the Wren is a festival that dates back to before Christian times, making it one of the oldest celebrations on the island. The wren is honored as the 'king of all birds,' and on St Stephen's Day, which falls on December 26, people gather in the streets to sing, dance, and celebrate. Participants join hands to form a circle around a decorated pole with a wren on top, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere.

This event is open to everyone, and there are several locations across the Isle of Man where you can join in. In Port St Mary, the gathering starts at 10:00 in the morning at the Scoill Phurt-le-Moirrey car park. In Douglas, festivities begin at 10:30 outside the Woodbourne Hotel, with people meeting up at 10:15. Ramsey hosts its celebration at 10:30 outside St Paul's Church. In St John's, the event takes place at 10:30 in the Arboretum car park, just before the Cammag players arrive. Willaston’s celebration starts at 10:45 across from The Manor pub in the school car park. Kirk Michael’s event begins at 11:00 outside The Mitre pub, Ballaugh’s at 11:20 outside The Raven pub, and Sulby’s at 11:40 at the Sulby Glen pub. These gatherings are a great way for families and friends to come together and enjoy the festive spirit.

Following Hunt the Wren, the annual Cammag match takes place in St John's. Cammag is the Isle of Man’s traditional national sport and is played with wooden sticks and a small ball, similar to hockey. The game is known for having very few rules, which makes it unpredictable and exciting. The match is played between teams from the north and south of the island, and it draws large crowds every year. Anyone interested in playing can pick up a Cammag stick at the Tynwald Fairfield before the game starts at 2:00 in the afternoon. After the match, there is a Manx music session at the Tynwald Inn, where people can continue to celebrate together. These traditions are an important part of the Isle of Man’s culture, helping to keep the island’s history alive and bringing people together during the holiday season.
