Community Spirit Shines Bright in Stunning New Forest Mural

A vibrant and meaningful mural is nearing completion in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, and it is already attracting attention from the local community. The mural, which has taken over eight weeks to paint, is located on the side of the 'Ow Bist' Forest Community Space on Dockham Road. It was created by Tom Cousins, a local artist, and was inspired by the ideas, history, and volunteer work of the people in the area. The mural features a variety of images, including a female rugby player, a butterfly, a biker, a man in a life jacket, a skateboarder, a ram, chickens, sheep, a hand holding an apple, and produce that has not yet been harvested. Each of these images has a special meaning and represents different aspects of the Forest of Dean's heritage and the important role of volunteers.

Tom Cousins explained that the mural is a celebration of all the voluntary work that happens in the Forest. He pointed out that a lot of the work that keeps the community going is done by people who are not paid. To show the importance of working together, he often included groups of three in the mural, such as three chickens, which is one of his favorite parts. The produce in the mural is a nod to the area's farming history, while other images highlight sports, outdoor activities, and teamwork. The Forest Voluntary Action Forum, or FVAF, is the local charity that supports people and community groups in the area. They played a big role in the mural project by asking the community what they wanted to see in the artwork. The response was overwhelming, with many people sharing their ideas. Catherine Best, a manager at FVAF, said that choosing which ideas to include was almost impossible because there were so many good suggestions.

The mural has already become popular with local residents, who often stop to take photos and admire the artwork. Catherine Best said that everyone at FVAF is extremely proud of the mural and that it is becoming the landmark they hoped it would be for Cinderford. She is looking forward to welcoming people into the newly transformed building and believes that the space will be enjoyed by everyone. The mural uses soft dark grey and green colors at the base, with a transition from night to day at the top, and includes a tree in the night scene. The project has brought people together and created a sense of pride in the community. It shows how art can celebrate local history, highlight the value of volunteers, and make a positive impact on a town. The mural is not just a piece of art; it is a symbol of community spirit and the power of working together.
