Ilaiyaraaja is one of India's most celebrated music composers, known for his incredible talent and unique style. He changed the sound of Tamil film music with his work on the movie Annakili in 1976, and since then, he has become one of the most influential composers in the country.

Before Ilaiyaraaja, most film music in India was based on classical Indian music, and Western music was not used much. Ilaiyaraaja changed this by mixing Indian folk music, Carnatic ragas, and Western classical music. He learned about Western music after moving to Chennai, where he studied under Dhanraj Master and became skilled at playing the guitar and piano. After that, he became very popular and composed music for many hit movies in different languages. His songs often mixed different styles, making them sound fresh and exciting. In the late 1970s and 1980s, new technology like cassette tapes made it easier for people to listen to music at home, and Ilaiyaraaja's songs became even more popular.
