Festival showcases deaf and disabled artists

This weekend, a vibrant festival is taking place in Stoke-on-Trent, dedicated to showcasing the incredible talents of deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent artists. The festival features a full program that includes various performances, engaging conversations, and a carefully curated exhibition. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of artistic expressions, including sound installations, dance, music, poetry, films, photographs, and drawings. The event is spearheaded by Frontline Dance and is being held at the Potteries Museum and Arts Gallery. One of the standout artists, Kayleigh Price, has created a commissioned installation that reflects her personal experiences with tension, trauma, and anxiety. In her artwork, she is depicted lying on the floor, with one arm wrapped around herself, gazing upwards with a worried expression. This installation serves as a powerful representation of her feelings and invites viewers to connect with her journey. Additionally, students from Newfriars College have contributed to the festival by capturing a series of photographs that celebrate diversity and challenge common perceptions about individuals with special needs. Their goal is to highlight the remarkable achievements of these individuals and to capture moments of joy and happiness. One of the eye-catching banners displayed at the festival is titled 'Autism Doesn't Have a Look. ' This banner is crafted from various textiles, featuring red and blue panels, with the title made from different fabrics. Surrounding the banner are square panels that include images and words such as 'normal people aren't normal,' 'hidden behind a mask,' 'accept, accept, accept,' and even the word 'tea. ' This banner was created by members of an arts group for autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities in the Stoke-on-Trent area. The group explored the concept of protest banners and worked collaboratively to design their own piece for the festival. Organizers noted that the members of the group were extremely proud of their creation, viewing it as a significant statement and a work of art that evokes powerful emotional responses. Inspired by historical protest banners made by trade unions, the group delved into books on the subject and engaged in discussions about their own experiences of feeling stereotyped and misunderstood. Over the course of five weeks, 18 members of the group participated in textile banner-making sessions to bring their vision to life. The festival not only highlights the artistic talents of these individuals but also serves as a platform for raising awareness and understanding about the diverse experiences of deaf and disabled artists.
