‘I wanted my clitoris back’ – FGM survivor opts for reconstructive surgery

Shamsa Sharawe is a courageous woman who has become well-known in the Somali community for her outspoken views against female genital mutilation, commonly referred to as FGM. This practice involves the cutting of female genitalia and can lead to severe physical and emotional consequences. Shamsa, who was born in Somalia, created a powerful video to illustrate the impact of FGM on her life. In the video, she used a rose to demonstrate what happened to her body when she was just six years old. She cut the petals off the rose with a razor blade and stitched the remaining parts together, symbolizing the pain and trauma she endured. This video gained immense popularity on TikTok, amassing nearly 12 million views in just 16 months. Despite the widespread nature of FGM, many in the Somali community, even those living abroad, remain silent about it. The consequences of FGM can include painful menstrual cycles, difficulties with urination, and complications during childbirth. Shamsa's story sheds light on these issues, as she bravely shares her experiences with humor and honesty. After moving to the UK in 2001 due to her family's escape from Somalia's civil war, Shamsa faced numerous challenges, including a forced marriage and sexual violence shortly after turning 18. It took her six months to find a way back to the UK, where she began to heal and advocate for change. One of the most significant taboos she confronted was her desire to reclaim her body. Shamsa underwent reconstructive surgery to restore her genitalia, a procedure not covered by the UK's National Health Service. She learned about this possibility through Haja Bilkisu, a woman from Germany who had also experienced FGM. Haja shared her own journey of having her clitoris reconstructed, which inspired Shamsa to seek similar help. The surgery involved reconstructing the clitoris and labia, using tissue from her buttocks, and removing scar tissue to alleviate pain and improve her quality of life. Shamsa spent three weeks in Germany for the surgery and documented her recovery process to inform other women about their options. Despite the challenges she faced, including the emotional toll of her past and the financial burden of the surgery, Shamsa remains determined to advocate for FGM survivors. She feels let down by the NHS, which only offers limited procedures for FGM survivors, and believes that women should have access to comprehensive care. Through crowdfunding, she raised £25,000 to cover her surgery costs, but she still faces financial difficulties due to additional expenses. Shamsa's story highlights the importance of addressing FGM and supporting women who have experienced it. She hopes to inspire others to speak out and seek help, emphasizing that everyone deserves to live a life free from pain and stigma.
