AI-Powered 'Heidi' Slashes NHS Wait Times and Boosts Patient Care

The NHS is using a new artificial intelligence tool called Heidi to help doctors and nurses save time and improve patient care. Heidi is a voice transcription tool that listens to conversations between doctors and patients and then writes down what was said. This means that doctors do not have to spend as much time typing up notes or letters after each appointment. Instead, they can focus more on their patients and less on paperwork.

Heidi is being used in urgent care, outpatient clinics, and GP surgeries across the West Midlands. Fifteen NHS Trusts have started using this tool together. Dr Mohammed Jamil Aslam, an emergency consultant at Walsall Manor Hospital, says that Heidi saves him about six minutes for every patient he sees. This adds up to a lot of time saved each day, allowing him to see more patients and help more people get diagnosed and treated faster. Dr Aslam also says that patients feel more listened to because the doctor is not distracted by typing during their visit.

In Dudley, the Heidi tool has helped reduce the time it takes to send letters to patients. Before, there was a big backlog, and it could take up to six months to send out all the letters. Now, with Heidi, it only takes about 14 days. Ravinder Sahota, who is in charge of information at The Dudley Group and Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals, says that Heidi is also helping to break down communication barriers. Many patients do not speak English as their first language, and sometimes the letters they receive are too complicated. Heidi can work in 110 different languages, making it easier for patients to understand their medical information. This makes patients feel more comfortable and confident about their care. The NHS hopes that using tools like Heidi will continue to improve the experience for both patients and staff.
