Farewell to Moya Brennan: Celtic Music’s Beloved Voice Passes at 73

Moya Brennan, the celebrated Irish singer and musician, has died at the age of 73. She was best known as the lead singer of Clannad, a group that won both Grammy and Bafta awards and became famous for their unique Celtic sound. Moya was born in the Irish-speaking region of Gaoth Dobhair in County Donegal. She grew up in a musical family and started performing with her siblings in their family pub, Leo's Tavern. In 1970, they formed Clannad, and her younger sister Enya later joined the group. Clannad became one of the most important traditional Irish bands, especially after their music was used in TV shows like Harry's Game, which was set during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and Robin of Sherwood. Their music helped make Celtic sounds popular around the world.

Clannad was the first band to sing in Irish on the famous British TV show Top of the Pops in 1982, performing the theme from Harry's Game. After that, they toured Europe and the world, recording about 25 albums and selling millions of records. Moya also had a successful solo career, releasing her first solo album, Máire, in 1992. She worked with famous musicians like Bono from U2, Mick Jagger, and Paul Young. Bono once said that Moya had one of the greatest voices ever heard. In 2011, she won an Emmy for a documentary called Music of Ireland, which she made with the American broadcaster PBS. Her final studio album was released in 2024.

Many people have paid tribute to Moya Brennan. Daniel O'Donnell, another singer from Donegal, said she was a wonderful person who always remembered her roots and helped young musicians. He said she was proud of being from Donegal and loved helping others succeed in music. Ireland's prime minister, Micheál Martin, said he was deeply saddened by her death and thanked her for bringing Irish folk music to the world. The deputy prime minister, Simon Harris, called her a musical icon with a beautiful and unique voice. Former president Michael D Higgins gave her a lifetime achievement award in 2019 and said her name would always be part of Irish music history. Clannad played their last concert in Dublin in 2023, marking 50 years since their first album. Moya Brennan will be remembered as a true legend of Irish music, loved by fans everywhere.
