
AI Sensors Revolutionize Care Homes: Fewer Falls, Faster Help!
Artificial intelligence sensors are making a big difference in care homes, helping to keep residents safer and giving families peace of mind. In Dorchester, Brian Gundry lives in a care home and experienced the benefits of this technology first-hand. Last year, Brian fell out of bed during the night. The AI sensors in his room detected the fall and immediately sent an alert to the care staff. Thanks to the quick response, Brian got help right away. He said the technology is brilliant because it helped him when he needed it most. The sensors are small devices attached to the wall, usually near the bed. They use sound and motion to notice changes in the room, especially at night. If someone falls, coughs a lot, or seems restless, the sensors pick up on these changes and send a message to the staff’s handheld devices. This means staff can respond quickly, even if they are not nearby.
Six care homes in Dorset took part in a trial to test these AI sensors. The results were impressive. The number of falls dropped by almost half, and there were far fewer times when residents fell without anyone seeing. Ambulance callouts went down by nearly two-thirds, and hospital transfers dropped by almost 80 percent. The sensors helped staff be more responsive to residents’ needs, especially at night when it’s harder to keep an eye on everyone. Jeanette A'court, the acting manager at Culliford House, said the trial was a real success. Even though the trial and its funding have ended, the care home has decided to keep using the sensors because they work so well. The technology also reassures families, who know their loved ones are being monitored and kept safe.
The Dorset Council said the trial was successful in five out of six care homes. The sensors made it possible for staff to check on residents without disturbing their sleep, leading to better rest and improved well-being. The government paid for the trial through a special fund for digital transformation in social care. Officials say they will provide more guidance and standards for using this kind of technology in the future, so more care homes can benefit. The company that made the sensors, Ally, said the goal is not to replace care staff but to give them better tools to keep residents safe, especially at night. With AI sensors, care homes can respond faster to emergencies and help residents stay healthy and comfortable.
