Battery warning after 70 fires at waste plant

In Lincolnshire, a serious problem has arisen due to the improper disposal of batteries and electronic devices. In 2024 alone, more than 70 fires have been reported at a waste processing plant near Grantham, all caused by discarded lithium-ion batteries and electronic waste. The local fire service has issued a strong warning to the public about the dangers of throwing away batteries in general waste bins. They emphasize that such careless disposal can have catastrophic consequences, including dangerous fires that are difficult to control.

Dan Moss, an area manager with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, explained that these fires often start when batteries are crushed during the recycling process. Lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in many everyday items such as disposable vapes, children’s toys, e-scooters, and electric cars, can ignite quickly if damaged. Disposable vapes are a major cause of these fires because they contain lithium-ion batteries that can catch fire when mixed with other combustible waste. Once a battery ignites, it can rapidly spread flames to surrounding materials, creating a serious hazard for waste workers and the environment.

The fire service urges people to be vigilant and to dispose of batteries properly by taking them to household waste recycling centers or designated supermarket drop-off points. This proper recycling helps prevent fires and protects both people and property. The message is clear: do not throw batteries in the general waste. Instead, recycle them safely to avoid the risk of fires and the damage they cause. The fire department continues to work hard to manage these risks and keep the community safe, but public cooperation is essential.
