Black Sabbath Ballet Rocks On: Dancing to Ozzy's Legendary Tunes

A new ballet performance is being staged to honor Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath, who passed away in July. The Birmingham Royal Ballet is presenting Black Sabbath – The Ballet, which will begin its tour with a special homecoming show at the Birmingham Hippodrome. This ballet was first created and performed in 2023, and it features classic Black Sabbath songs like Paranoid and Iron Man, as well as new orchestral pieces inspired by the band's music. The opening night is dedicated to Ozzy, making it a meaningful event for fans who want to remember his legacy.

Amelia Thompson, a dancer from Worcester, shared that performing the ballet after Ozzy's death adds a deeper significance to the show. She hopes that Black Sabbath fans will find joy in reliving the music and concerts that meant so much to them. Ozzy, known as the Prince of Darkness, died at the age of 76, just weeks after the band's final concert in Birmingham. Thousands of fans gathered in the city to pay their respects, cheering as his coffin passed by. The ballet's costumes are not traditional; instead, dancers wear black all-in-ones, jeans, jackets, and T-shirts featuring original Black Sabbath designs.

Thompson explained that dancing to heavy metal music is not as unusual as it might seem. She said that Black Sabbath's music is very instrumental and has strong beats that work well for choreography. The ballet blends classical dance with the energy of rock music, creating a unique experience for both dancers and the audience. On the day of Ozzy's funeral, his wife Sharon Osbourne laid flowers in Birmingham's Broad Street, where fans had left hundreds of bouquets near Black Sabbath Bridge. The band's guitarist, Tony Iommi, revealed that Ozzy had wanted to see the ballet but never got the chance. Iommi expressed his delight at seeing Black Sabbath's music become part of a ballet production. The tour will run until September 27, giving fans more opportunities to celebrate Ozzy Osbourne and the band's influential music.
