Judge Blocks Pentagon's Plot to Muzzle AI Star Anthropic's Tech

A federal judge has sided with the artificial intelligence company Anthropic in a legal battle against the Pentagon. The dispute began when the Pentagon, which is the part of the US government responsible for the military, tried to stop all government agencies from using Anthropic's AI tools. The Pentagon said it was worried about how Anthropic's technology could be used, especially since Anthropic did not want to agree to new contract terms. These new terms would have allowed the Pentagon to use Anthropic's tools for any legal purpose, but Anthropic was concerned this could include things like mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.

The situation became more heated when President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth publicly criticized Anthropic. Hegseth even called the company a 'supply chain risk,' which is a label usually given to companies from countries that are not friendly with the US. This was the first time an American company had ever been called that in public. Anthropic said that being labeled this way hurt their business and violated their right to free speech. They decided to sue the government, arguing that the Pentagon was punishing them for speaking out about their concerns.

Judge Rita Lin agreed with Anthropic, at least for now. She said the government's actions seemed like 'First Amendment retaliation,' which means punishing someone for expressing their opinions. The judge also pointed out that the Pentagon's leaders called Anthropic names like 'woke' and 'left-wing nut jobs,' instead of focusing on real security issues. Because of the judge's order, Anthropic's tools can still be used by the government and its partners until the lawsuit is finished. Anthropic said they are pleased with the decision and want to keep working with the government to make sure their AI is safe and reliable for everyone. The Pentagon, however, was not happy and said the judge made mistakes in her decision.
