Wildfire warning in place as dry weather continues

A warning has been issued regarding the risk of wildfires due to the ongoing dry weather conditions. This amber alert will remain in effect throughout the week and specifically affects the regions of Dorset and Wiltshire. The Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has strongly advised the public against using disposable barbecues and having campfires, as these activities are prohibited in many areas of Dorset. Additionally, they have urged smokers to ensure that their cigarettes are completely extinguished before discarding them. The fire service has indicated that this amber alert is the second one issued this year, highlighting the increasing concern over fire safety. Current weather forecasts predict that there will be no rain in the early part of April, which raises the risk of wildfires even further. In the event that anyone witnesses a wildfire, they are encouraged to call 999 immediately. A significant fire occurred in May 2020, which resulted in the destruction of approximately 220 hectares of woodland and heathland. This blaze lasted for more than two weeks and was believed to have been ignited by a disposable barbecue. In response to this incident, a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) has been implemented in certain areas of Wareham Forest to help prevent future wildfires. Authorities are currently considering additional measures to protect grasslands, heathlands, and forested areas across Dorset. These potential restrictions could impose fines of £100 on individuals caught lighting barbecues, lanterns, or fireworks, or those who drop cigarettes in these sensitive areas. It is crucial for everyone to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of our natural environment.
