'Best film' nomination for 18-year-old's debut

Grace Holt, an 18-year-old filmmaker from Sheffield, has achieved an impressive milestone with her debut short film 'No Dice' being nominated for best film in the 16-19 age category at a prestigious awards ceremony in London. The film, which Grace wrote and directed as part of her A-Level Film Studies coursework, will be screened at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square during an event organized by the film charity Into Film. Grace expressed her excitement and surprise at the nomination, describing it as a dream come true and a hopeful sign that her passion for filmmaking will be recognized if she continues to pursue it. Currently a student at Lancaster University, Grace acknowledged the challenges of breaking into the film industry, making this early recognition even more meaningful.

'No Dice' is a unique short film that blends fantasy and reality by following a Dungeons and Dragons-style role-playing game. The story alternates between the imaginative world within the game and the real lives of the players, who are residents of a care home. Grace intentionally cast older actors in roles that defy typical fantasy stereotypes, portraying them as playful and sometimes reckless characters rather than the usual wise and serious figures. She found the cast through local acting websites and received support from her teachers at Wales High School. Although initially nervous, Grace grew more confident in directing the actors and communicating her creative vision as the project progressed.

The awards ceremony on June 24 will showcase the nominated films and will be hosted by actress and Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis, who expressed her honor at hosting the event. She highlighted the high quality of the films and the importance of providing young people with a platform to express themselves through filmmaking. The annual ceremony has previously attracted well-known actors such as Daniel Craig, Lashana Lynch, Martin Freeman, and Lily James, underscoring its significance in the film community.
