The United Nations (UN) rights chief, Volker Turk, expressed serious concern on Wednesday over allegations of sexual violence by Hamas militants during their October 7 attack. He urged Israel to grant his team access to investigate these allegations.

'These are very, very serious allegations and they need to be investigated, they need to be properly documented,' Turk stated during a press conference. He emphasized the need for justice for the victims and mentioned that he had repeatedly requested Israel to allow his team to investigate the claims, but received no response.

Turk's comments were made amidst growing criticism of the UN for its perceived inadequate response to the alleged sexual violence committed during Hamas's unprecedented attack inside Israel on October 7. Even before forensic examinations began, a plethora of images indicated the gruesome nature of the attacks. These images were shared online and live footage was streamed by the militants as they killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to an Israeli count.
