NHS Choir Harmonizes TikTok Hit, Moves Artist to Tears

A community choir made up of NHS staff from Hull was recently invited to record a song with rock musician Sam Scherdel. Sam is from Sheffield and wrote a song called 'Somewhere in the Middle. ' This song became very popular after it was played on the TV show Love Island and got over two million views on TikTok. The Hull NHS Choir created their own choral version of the song, which caught Sam's attention when he saw a video of their performance online. He was so moved by their singing that he decided to invite them to record the song together at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield, where he had recorded the original version.

Lucy Vere, the leader of the Hull NHS Choir, explained how the collaboration started. She attended one of Sam's concerts last year and was deeply impressed by his song. She suggested it to the choir as a possible new piece for them to perform. The choir began practicing the song in January and soon made their own arrangement. When they posted a video of their performance on TikTok, they tagged Sam in the post. To their surprise, Sam replied and expressed how much he loved their version. This was the first time an artist had ever responded to their social media posts.

Within just six weeks of posting the video, the choir found themselves in the studio with Sam, recording the song together. The new choral version will be released on Bandcamp, and all the money raised will go to two hospital charities in the region. The Hull NHS Choir was formed in 2014 and has performed at important events, including the King's Coronation concert at Windsor Castle. Their main purpose is to help NHS staff relax, enjoy music, and feel appreciated. Sam will also perform live with the choir at The Social in Hull on May 22. Both Sam and the choir are excited about this unique project, and Sam said that hearing the choir sing his song brought tears to his eyes because it was so moving.
