The Yemeni government, backed by Saudi Arabia, and the Iran-aligned Houthis have both pledged to take steps towards a ceasefire, according to the United Nations (UN) special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg. The announcement was made on Saturday.

The Houthis, who have control over northern Yemen, have been engaged in a conflict with a Saudi-led military coalition since 2015. This conflict has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and has left 80% of Yemen's population reliant on humanitarian aid. Grundberg issued a statement from his office, expressing his approval of the parties' commitment to measures that would implement a nationwide ceasefire, improve living conditions in Yemen, and engage in preparations for the resumption of an inclusive political process under UN supervision.

Grundberg will now liaise with the parties to establish a roadmap under UN supervision that includes these commitments and supports their implementation. The roadmap, in addition to a ceasefire, will also include the two sides' commitment to resume oil exports, pay all public sector salaries, open roads in Taiz and other parts of Yemen, and further ease restrictions on Sanaa Airport and the Hudaydah port.
