Peek Beneath History: Unveiling 500 Years of Underwear Fashion

Sewerby Hall, located near Bridlington, is hosting a fascinating exhibition called Underwear Autumn, which explores the history of underwear over the past 500 years. Visitors to the exhibition can see a variety of historical undergarments, including petticoats, corsets, and bustles. Some of the highlights are Tudor blackwork embroidery, Regency chemises, and a lobster-tail bustle from around 1880. These items are displayed throughout the Grade I listed house, in rooms such as the blue bedroom, dining room, and drawing room, and the exhibition is open during weekends and school holidays throughout the autumn and winter.

One of the most notable pieces in the exhibition is the lobster-tail bustle, which marked a significant change in women's fashion. Before the bustle became popular, dresses had a rounded and soft appearance. The lobster-tail bustle, however, created a more sculpted and voluminous silhouette, changing the way women looked and how their clothes fit. Some of the items on display are reproductions made by volunteers at the hall, including Jeni White from Hull. She said she always felt it was a shame that such beautiful handiwork was hidden under layers of clothing, even if the dresses themselves were pretty. Now, thanks to the exhibition, visitors can appreciate the skill and effort that went into making these garments.

Councillor Nick Coultish, who is responsible for culture, leisure, and tourism, said the exhibition gives people a chance to explore a different side of history. He explained that undergarments played a big role in shaping the style and appearance of historical costumes, and they have influenced how we see famous figures from the past. Most of the items in the exhibition are not usually shown to the public, so this is a rare opportunity to see them up close. In addition to the underwear, the exhibition also features other interesting items, such as a copy of Woman's Own magazine with Charles and Diana on the cover, a Spitting Image board game, and a party game. There are also displays with mannequins dressed in historical gowns and a model of a brick house. Sewerby Hall is open on weekends during autumn and winter, except for the October and February half-term holidays, when it is open every day.
