Get Ready to Explore the Blocky Thrills of Minecraft World at Chessington!
A brand new attraction called Minecraft World is set to open at Chessington World of Adventures, a popular theme park located just outside London. This exciting project is a collaboration between Mojang, the creators of the famous video game Minecraft, and Merlin Entertainments, the company that owns Chessington as well as other well-known parks like Alton Towers and Thorpe Park. The Minecraft World project is a huge investment, costing around £50 million, and is expected to open its doors to visitors next year.
The concept images released show that Minecraft World will be designed to look and feel just like the game. There will be a large blocky earth structure in the center, made up of grey, brown, green, and blue squares, just like the blocks in Minecraft. Visitors will be able to walk around and explore areas filled with creatures from the game, such as pigs, Creepers, and bees. The attraction will feature a rollercoaster, themed dining areas, and interactive exhibits where guests can learn more about the game and its world. One of the main rides will take passengers along a track lined with TNT blocks, which are one of the most recognizable items in Minecraft.
Minecraft has been a massive hit since it was first released on PC in 2011. It has sold over 300 million copies worldwide and has become one of the best-selling video games ever. The game is also extremely popular on YouTube, where videos related to Minecraft have been watched more than one trillion times. This popularity has helped Minecraft become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring toys, clothing, and even a successful movie. The creators of the new park say they want visitors to feel like they have stepped right into the game. To make sure the park feels authentic, the design team even built parts of the park inside Minecraft and worked with members of the Minecraft community to get their feedback.
Recently, four well-known Minecraft YouTubers—Grian, Aimsey, DanTDM, and LDShadowLady—were invited to tour the construction site. They wore orange safety vests and green helmets with the Minecraft World logo as they looked at the plans and saw where the park is being built. Kayleen Walters, the Head of Mojang Studios, said that fans have been asking for more ways to experience Minecraft, and this theme park is a way to make that happen. She explained that the team wants visitors to use all their senses and feel completely surrounded by the world of Minecraft.
Angela Jobson from Merlin Entertainments said that the idea for this project has been in the works for about eight years. She also mentioned that while Merlin has faced some complaints about queues and ride closures at other parks, they are still investing in all their parks, not just Minecraft World. Jobson believes that the new attraction will be a game changer for Chessington and will offer something unique for guests. She also said that the park needs to be credible for Minecraft fans, but also fun for everyone.
Chessington World of Adventures has been open since 1987 and has always looked for new ways to attract visitors. Minecraft World is not the first theme park attraction based on a video game. For example, Super Nintendo World opened in Japan in 2021 and has since been built in the USA as well. There is also a Pokémon park near Tokyo, and in London, there have been special events for Pokémon and Assassin's Creed. With Universal Studios UK expected to open near Bedford in 2031, there will be even more competition, but Merlin says they welcome it and think it will be good for the UK’s visitor economy.
When Minecraft World opens, guests will be able to ride rollercoasters, see life-sized Minecraft creatures, and explore areas that look just like the game. The goal is to create a place where everyone, whether they are big Minecraft fans or just looking for a fun day out, can have a great time. The creators hope that Minecraft World will become a special place where families and friends can make lasting memories together.
