Dippy the Dinosaur Roars On in Coventry Through 2027!

Dippy the dinosaur, a famous replica skeleton, will remain in Coventry until February 2027, giving people more time to visit this popular exhibit. Dippy is an 85-foot-long model of a Diplodocus, and it has been on display at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum since 2023. The museum decided to extend Dippy's stay because so many people have come to see it. According to the museum's managers, Dippy has become the nation's favorite dinosaur and has inspired hundreds of thousands of visitors. Marguerite Nugent, who helps run the museum, said that Dippy has been a huge hit with people of all ages and has made the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum a must-see place in the West Midlands.

Dippy's story began in 1905 when the replica was first shown at the Natural History Museum in London. For more than a century, Dippy amazed visitors there. In 2018, Dippy went on a tour around the United Kingdom, visiting different cities and bringing in large crowds wherever it went. This increase in visitors became known as the 'Dippy effect. ' In Coventry alone, Dippy has attracted about 500,000 visitors over three years. A research group called Durnin Research estimated that Dippy brought about £2. 1 million to Coventry's visitor economy between February 2023 and February 2025.

The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has also organized special dinosaur-themed events to go along with the Dippy exhibit. These events have been especially popular with families. Some of the activities include 'Doze under Dippy,' where people can spend the night under the dinosaur skeleton, and the Brick Dinos exhibition, which features dinosaur sculptures made out of Lego bricks. Marguerite Nugent said that the extra year with Dippy will give the museum more chances to inspire and educate local families. Dr. Alex Burch from the Natural History Museum said that Dippy helps people care about the natural world and brings economic benefits to Coventry. The museum is excited to have Dippy for another year and hopes even more people will come to visit and learn about dinosaurs and nature.
