Why Northern Ireland Is the Only Place for This Game of Thrones Prequel Magic

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the latest addition to the Game of Thrones universe, and fans are excited for its release. This new series is a prequel, meaning it takes place before the events of the original Game of Thrones. The story is based on three novellas by George RR Martin and follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. These characters, affectionately known as Dunk and Egg, embark on journeys across the land of Westeros. Unlike the other spin-off, House of the Dragon, which is filmed in England and uses a lot of computer-generated imagery, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was filmed almost entirely in Northern Ireland.

The filming locations are some of the most scenic spots in Northern Ireland, including Glenarm Castle, Myra Castle, Tollymore Forest Park, Hen Mountain, Cave Hill, and the Hidden Village of Galboly. Titanic Studios in Belfast was also used for some scenes. Robert Dowling, who runs Game of Thrones tours, believes that the landscapes of Northern Ireland are perfect for this series. He says that the outdoor filming and natural beauty make the show special and that it could only be filmed there. The story is set about a century before Game of Thrones and a hundred years after House of the Dragon. The focus is on character development and the relationship between Dunk and Egg as they travel together, which reminds fans of the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

Dowling started his Game of Thrones tours in 2014, showing fans the real-life locations used in the original series. Now, he plans to add the new sites from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to his tours. He expects the number of locations to grow as more seasons are made. HBO, the network behind the show, has already confirmed a second season, which will start filming in December 2025 and is expected to be released in 2027. George RR Martin has hinted that he may write more stories about Dunk and Egg, so the series could continue beyond the three planned seasons. People in Northern Ireland are happy about the show's return because it brings jobs and tourists. Adrian Hanna, who worked as an extra on both Game of Thrones and the new series, said it was great to see familiar faces on set again. He hopes the show will lead to a new wave of visitors to the region.
