Ireland’s Groundbreaking Basic Income Boosts Artists’ Creativity and Careers

Ireland has announced a new and unique program to support artists called the Basic Income for the Arts. This program will give artists living in Ireland a weekly payment of 325 euros, which is about 283 pounds. The goal is to help artists focus on their creative work without worrying so much about money. The program will select 2,000 artists to receive the weekly payment for three years. Applications will open in May, and artists from all over Ireland are encouraged to apply. The government tried a similar pilot program before, which was started to help the arts sector recover after the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Culture Minister, every euro spent on the pilot program brought back even more money to the economy. He said the program allowed artists to spend more time on their work and improved their quality of life. The new permanent program is seen as a major milestone for the arts in Ireland.

To be eligible, artists must live in Ireland, be professional artists, and have a creative practice mainly based in Ireland. The selection process will be anonymous and random, so everyone has an equal chance. The Department of Culture expects a lot of applications, but only 2,000 artists will be chosen. Those who are not selected can try again in the next round in 2029. The government hopes this program will support a wide range of artists and help the arts sector grow stronger.
