SK Hynix Scores $26.5B in Epic US Share Splash Boosted by AI Craze

SK Hynix, a leading South Korean computer chip manufacturer, has made headlines by raising $26. 5 billion in a massive share sale in the United States. This event marks the largest ever listing by a foreign company on the US stock market. SK Hynix is a key supplier to Nvidia, a major player in artificial intelligence technology. The company sold 177. 9 million American depositary shares at $149 each, and these shares will begin trading on the Nasdaq exchange. This move comes as SK Hynix's business has been booming, especially with the growing demand for AI chips. In fact, the company's share price in South Korea has more than tripled this year, helping to push the Kospi index up by over 70 percent. Alongside Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix is one of the world's top memory chip makers, and the industry is seeing huge investments as AI becomes more important.

The US share sale gives SK Hynix easier access to large amounts of investment from American investors, who face fewer restrictions than those in South Korea. According to Professor Jaewon Choi from Seoul National University, this listing is a way to test if investors are still excited about memory chip companies. The AI boom has led to many companies raising money on the stock market. For example, SpaceX, which owns GrokAI, recently raised $85. 7 billion, becoming the world's biggest ever listing. Other AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are also planning to go public, with values over $1 trillion.

There was strong demand for SK Hynix's shares, with investors wanting to buy more than seven times the number of shares available. This shows that many people believe SK Hynix is a key part of the AI supply chain. Each American depositary share is worth a tenth of a regular SK Hynix share traded in Seoul, making it easier for US investors to buy in. The company plans to use the money raised to build new factories and develop advanced chips, mainly in South Korea. Shanti Keleman, an investment officer, said that the US is a good place to raise money because there are many willing investors. However, Professor Yun Youngjin from Hanyang University warned that listing on Nasdaq could be risky if investors move their money from South Korea to the US. The South Korean government recently announced plans to invest over $880 billion in partnership with SK Hynix and Samsung. Both companies are now valued at more than $1 trillion, joining other tech giants like Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Google-owner Alphabet.
