Wolverhampton's Iconic Brutalist Art School Earns Coveted Grade II Status

The University of Wolverhampton's School of Art building has recently been granted Grade II listed status, marking it as a protected landmark in the city. This brutalist-style structure, known for its bold and grey concrete design, has been a significant part of Wolverhampton's skyline since it first opened in 1970. The building, also called the MK Building, became a symbol of the city when the College of Art merged with the College of Technology to form Wolverhampton Polytechnic.

The decision to protect the School of Art came after nearly 7,000 people signed a petition to save it, following the university's announcement of plans to demolish the building. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, acting on advice from Historic England, agreed to list the building due to its architectural and social importance. Despite financial challenges that led to the closure of several courses in 2022, the building continues to be used for teaching and remains a hub for creativity.

Deborah Williams, the regional director of Historic England, highlighted the building's unique design and its role in the city's history. She noted that the School of Art is not only a striking example of brutalist architecture but also played a key part in the British Black art movement. In 1982, the building hosted the first National Black Art Convention, which helped empower black artists during a time of racial tension. The School of Art stands as a testament to Wolverhampton's commitment to art, culture, and diversity.
