Andy Serkis Talks LOTR Casting Choices and His Bold New Animal Farm Film

Andy Serkis is well known for his roles in movies that use motion capture technology, like Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes series. He is currently in New Zealand, directing and starring in a new Lord of the Rings film called The Hunt for Gollum, which is expected to be released next Christmas. This movie takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories and explores Gollum's past before he became the character we know. Gandalf, the wizard, is also part of the story, trying to learn more about the mysterious ring that Bilbo Baggins found. Andy Serkis says the movie will look deeply into Gollum's mind and history, but he cannot share all the details yet.

Throughout his career, Andy Serkis has spoken out about equality in the film industry. When he acted in Black Panther, he was one of the few white actors on set, which gave him a new perspective on being in the minority. However, the Lord of the Rings movies, which were made before more diverse casting became common, had mostly white actors. The new film seems to be following the same pattern, with stars like Jamie Dornan, Kate Winslet, and Anya Taylor-Joy. When asked about this, Serkis explained that the world of Tolkien's stories was inspired by Norse mythology and that the Shire, where the hobbits live, is a very closed community. He said that while there have been criticisms about the lack of diversity, the filmmakers are not just casting people to check boxes. Instead, they want to choose actors who fit the story and the world that Tolkien created.

In addition to his work on Lord of the Rings, Andy Serkis has directed a new animated version of George Orwell's Animal Farm. He remembers reading the book as a child and being deeply moved by the story of the animals who try to create a better life but end up facing disappointment. The new movie features a star-studded voice cast, including Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, and Steve Buscemi. Serkis says they wanted to make the film appeal to a wide audience, including children, so they added some humor and even a happy ending. Some critics did not like the changes and gave the movie poor reviews, but Serkis believes that the story still makes people think and talk, which is what George Orwell would have wanted.
