Artbox Studio: Where Creativity Empowers Adults with Learning Disabilities

Artbox is an art studio in Islington, north London, that supports adults with learning disabilities and autism. Founded by Madeline Alterman in 2011, Artbox began with just £300, a few volunteers, and a big idea: to give people with learning disabilities real opportunities to create and share art. Today, Artbox works with over 90 artists every week, offering studio space, art materials, and guidance from tutors and volunteers. The studio is a lively and welcoming place, filled with color, creativity, and music. Artists at Artbox have achieved impressive things. Some have had their work exhibited, commissioned, and sold. For example, Shruti designed an advent calendar for the beauty brand Lush, and Seatton painted the cover for Irish musician CMAT's second album. Richard's painting, called SHIP, was featured in House and Garden magazine. These successes show that Artbox artists are talented and their work is valued by people outside the studio. Madeline started Artbox because she saw that adults with learning disabilities often felt lonely, isolated, and undervalued. She wanted to create a space where they could feel respected and have meaningful experiences. Madeline has a background in art and psychology, and she grew up with a younger brother who has learning disabilities. Her family always encouraged her to include him and advocate for better support. This experience inspired her to help others through Artbox.

The studio is a place where everyone is accepted for who they are. Tutor Katie Parsons explains that each person is unique, and there are no simple rules about what people with autism like or dislike. For example, some people with autism dislike loud noises, but others enjoy them. The studio adapts to each artist's needs, making sure everyone feels comfortable. Seeta, one of the artists, is 52 years old and loves drawing animals. She recently spent 90 minutes creating a detailed drawing of a parrot she saw on TV. Seeta has epilepsy and panic attacks, and she was in comas as a child. Despite these challenges, she finds joy in art. She remembers selling her first painting at age 20 and running home to tell her parents the exciting news. Violet is another artist who joined Artbox after her mother passed away. At first, she used only dark colors because she was grieving. Over time, she discovered the beauty of bright colors and realized she could be an artist. Now, Violet is a volunteer and workshop leader, helping others gain confidence and raise funds for Artbox.

Artbox also encourages artists to share their skills with the community. For example, an artist with Down's syndrome returned to the Francis Crick Institute, where she had been a patient, to lead a workshop for World Down's Syndrome Day. Madeline says that Artbox artists are not afraid to create. They don't worry about making mistakes or being judged. Instead, they focus on expressing themselves and enjoying the process. Madeline is committed to making sure their work is seen, celebrated, and taken seriously. She believes that when adults with learning disabilities are given the right environment—one that is respectful, well-resourced, and properly staffed—they can thrive. Artbox is more than just a studio; it's a community where people can make friends, learn new skills, and feel proud of their achievements. The organization continues to look for new ways to support its artists and help them reach their full potential.
