Drought Drama: Grapes Glow While Veggies Wilt in England's Heatwave

This year, England has experienced a long period of hot and dry weather, which has affected farmers in different ways. Phil Collins, a vegetable farmer from Wiltshire, has never needed an overdraft before, but now his crops are suffering. Six weeks without rain have ruined his cauliflowers and potatoes, and he has lost a lot of money. He said he lost six thousand cauliflowers, each worth one pound and twenty-five pence. Many vegetable farmers are warning that there might be a shortage of vegetables because of the drought.

However, not all farmers are struggling. Some winemakers are actually doing better than usual. Sandy Luck owns a vineyard in Somerset, and she says the grapevines are thriving in the warm, dry weather. The grapes are growing well, and some are already turning purple, which means they are ripening early. Sandy explained that the hot weather helps the grapes ripen and keeps them healthy by preventing diseases. This year, they can make more types of wine, including still red wines, which are usually hard to produce in England's cooler climate. The extra sunshine means the grapes have more sugar, which leads to higher alcohol content in the wine.

The climate in southern England is now similar to what central France had twenty years ago. This change allows English winemakers to produce a wider variety of wines, not just the traditional sparkling and dry white wines. In 2025, English wine production increased by fifty-five percent compared to the previous year. However, Sandy says that English wine is still more expensive than French wine because their vineyards are smaller and they focus on quality rather than quantity.

Meanwhile, Phil Collins is facing a tough time. He showed his fields where the cauliflowers have dried up and turned brown. Even his potatoes, which are supposed to be drought-resistant, could not survive the dry weather. Phil sells his vegetables at farmers' markets, but he cannot compete with supermarket prices. If he tried to water all his crops, it would cost too much, making his vegetables even more expensive. He is only getting about a third of the usual amount of runner beans. Phil said that in thirty years, he has never needed an overdraft, but this year is so difficult that he has no other option.

Climate scientists from the Met Office say that the weather in England is changing because of climate change, and hot, dry summers will become more common. This is good news for vineyards, as grapevines can grow deep roots and produce more grapes in these conditions. Sandy Luck explained that the heat stress actually helps the vines grow better. But for vegetable farmers like Phil, it is hard to know what to plant next year. He thought about growing pumpkins, which usually do well in hot weather, but even they struggled this year. Phil looked at his dry fields and said he is not sure what to grow if the weather stays like this.
