Hull's Rising Star Robert Aramayo Shines Bright with Double Bafta Wins!

Robert Aramayo, an actor from Hull, has become a source of inspiration for many after his impressive achievements at the 2026 Bafta Awards. He won both the best actor award for his portrayal of John Davidson in the film 'I Swear' and the Rising Star prize, making his hometown extremely proud. Aramayo studied performing arts at Wyke College in Hull and was involved with Hull Truck Theatre during his early years. When he received his awards, he was visibly emotional and said that the experience was overwhelming and hard to believe.

Laura Bulless from Wyke College expressed how the entire city of Hull was supporting Robert, especially as he won both the newcomer and leading actor awards. She mentioned that his success is something students at the college can look up to and be inspired by as they pursue their own goals. Mark Babych, the artistic director at Hull Truck Theatre, described Robert's win as a moment worth celebrating. He said that while the result was incredible, it was not surprising because Robert is a phenomenal actor. Babych also highlighted how important it is for local theatres to support young talent and how Robert's achievements reflect positively on their efforts.

The film 'I Swear' tells the story of John Davidson, who grew up in Scotland during the 1980s and lived with Tourette's syndrome, a condition that causes people to make sudden, repetitive movements or sounds known as tics. Davidson has worked to raise awareness about Tourette's and was honored with an MBE in 2019 for his efforts. Robert Aramayo described Davidson as the most remarkable man he has ever met. Georgia Bayliff, one of the film's producers, said she was extremely proud of Robert and the dedication he showed to the role. She noted that there was tough competition in the best actor category, but Robert's performance stood out to everyone on set. Bayliff also praised the entire team behind the film, saying that its success comes from telling a personal story that can connect with people all over the world.
