Summer Flights in Jeopardy: Jet Fuel Shortages Threaten Holiday Plans

As summer approaches, many people are planning their holidays, but there is a new challenge that could affect travel plans: jet fuel shortages and rising prices. The cost of jet fuel has increased sharply in recent weeks, mainly because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Strait of Hormuz, a key route for shipping fuel, has been blocked for about two months. This has made it difficult for Europe and the UK to get enough jet fuel, since the Gulf region usually supplies about 20 percent of the world’s jet fuel and more than half of what Europe needs.

Because of the shortage, airlines are struggling. Many have raised ticket prices, especially for long-haul flights. For example, a flight from London to Melbourne now costs 76 percent more than last year. Some airlines, like Lufthansa, have cancelled thousands of flights to save money. Airlines try to protect themselves from price changes by buying fuel in advance, but this does not always cover all their needs. EasyJet, for instance, had to pay an extra £25 million in March for fuel it did not buy early. US airlines, which often do not buy fuel in advance, are even more exposed to these high prices.

There is also a real risk that some airports could run out of jet fuel if the situation does not improve. The International Energy Agency warned that Europe could face shortages by June if new supplies are not found. Europe is trying to get more fuel from the US and Asia, but these regions cannot fully replace the lost supply from the Middle East. The UK government is making it easier for airlines to cancel flights early without losing their valuable airport slots, and is asking refineries to produce more jet fuel. In the long term, the UK and Europe are looking at making more Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which is better for the environment, but this will take time and investment. For now, travelers should be prepared for higher prices and possible changes to their summer holiday plans if jet fuel remains in short supply.
