Adele thwarted sale of 'haunted' £6m house - owner

Adele, the renowned singer known for her powerful voice and emotional songs, has found herself at the center of a controversy regarding a mansion she once rented. The mansion, called Lock House, is valued at £6 million and is located in Partridge Green, West Sussex. The current owners of the property claim that Adele's comments during a television interview in 2012 have negatively impacted their efforts to sell the house. During her time living there, Adele made remarks that suggested the house had a spooky atmosphere. She stated in an interview with Anderson Cooper, 'This bit's all quite scary, really. I'm not rattling around here on my own. It gives me the creeps. ' Although she did not explicitly use the term 'haunted,' the owners believe that her words have led potential buyers to think twice about purchasing the property. The owners have submitted plans to convert Lock House from a single-family dwelling into three separate residential units. They also intend to transform an existing garage and flat into a separate cottage. In their planning application, they expressed that Adele's comments have hindered their ability to market the property effectively. They stated, 'The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and blighted the property by saying it is haunted. ' This statement highlights their belief that her remarks have cast a shadow over the house's reputation, making it difficult to attract buyers. After Adele vacated the property, it was relisted for sale, but unfortunately, it did not receive any offers. The house was then rented to a tenant who initially intended to use it for a bespoke dressmaking business. However, it was later discovered that the tenant was actually running a residential retreat with 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness boot camp. According to the owners, they have been actively trying to sell Lock House for approximately 14 years. The only offer they received was in August 2020, but the prospective buyer withdrew after learning about the supposed haunted status of the property. Lock House was originally built around 1909 and underwent significant renovations in 1940. In 1971, it was divided and sold at auction in 26 separate lots. Eventually, it was purchased by a church and became the Convent of the Visitation. The current owner acquired Lock House in 2003 from a property trader who had bought it after the convent moved to Albourne. Presently, Lock House boasts 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a helicopter pad, and a cinema room. It is currently listed for sale at £5,995,000.
