Medieval Manuscripts Uncovered: Guernsey's Secret Reading Treasures Revealed!

In Guernsey, a small island in the Channel Islands, seventeen fragments of medieval manuscripts have been discovered after being hidden for centuries. These fragments were found in the Island Archives, where they had been reused as covers for notebooks and as bindings for official records. This accidental preservation has given historians a rare look into the reading habits and literary culture of Guernsey during the late medieval period.

The discovery was made by a team of archivists and experts, including Professor Tamara Atkin from the University of Oxford and Dr. David Rundle from the University of Kent. The search began when archival assistant Callum Tostevin-Hall was asked to find a 16th-century copy of Edward III's 1331 Extente of Guernsey, a document about the Crown's rights on the island. While searching, he noticed a reference to a vellum cover with Latin writing. When he checked it, he realized it was a reused page from a medieval manuscript. This led to the discovery of more fragments, all of which had been hidden in plain sight for hundreds of years.

The fragments reveal that people in Guernsey during the late medieval period were enthusiastic readers. Interestingly, they preferred to read in French rather than English, which is different from today. The fragments come from a variety of books, including those used for school, church, and literature. Most of the fragments are in Latin, but six are in French. One of the French fragments is from a rare play called L'Estoire de Griseldis, written around 1395 by Philippe de Mézières. This story was popular in medieval Europe, but the version found in Guernsey is considered exceptionally rare. The discovery also shows that recycling and reusing materials was common in Guernsey even centuries ago. By reusing old parchment as book covers, people unknowingly helped preserve important pieces of the island's history.
