India's Bold Leap to Craft Rare Earth Magnets and Cut China Dependence

India is working hard to make its own rare earth magnets, which are used in many important products like electric vehicles, wind turbines, smartphones, and medical equipment. These magnets are small but very powerful, and they are a key part of modern technology. Right now, India depends on China for most of its rare earth magnets and the materials needed to make them. China controls more than 90 percent of the world's rare earth processing, and in 2025, India imported about $221 million worth of magnets and related materials from China. This dependence became a problem when China limited exports during a trade dispute, which caused trouble for Indian carmakers and electronics companies.

To solve this problem, India approved a plan in November 2025 to spend 73 billion rupees, or about $800 million, to help Indian companies make 6,000 tonnes of permanent magnets each year within seven years. The goal is to meet the growing demand for magnets in India, which is expected to double in five years. The government will give money and rewards to companies that make magnets, but experts say that money alone is not enough. India does not have much experience making rare earth magnets, while countries like Japan, South Korea, and Germany have been doing it for years. Experts believe India will need to work with other countries to get the technology and train workers. There are research centers in India, and new projects have started, but they have not produced magnets yet.

India has the third-largest rare earth reserves in the world, with about 8 percent of the global total, mostly in coastal states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. However, India mines less than 1 percent of the world's rare earths, and only one mine is currently operating. Most of the minerals from this mine were sent to Japan, but now India wants to keep them for its own use. Even if India increases mining, it still does not have all the types of rare earths needed for the best magnets. For example, India has a lot of lighter rare earths like neodymium, but not enough heavier ones like dysprosium and terbium, which are important for high-performance magnets. This means India might still need to buy some materials from China. Another challenge is making enough magnets to meet demand, which is already around 7,000 tonnes a year and growing. Indian companies also need to make magnets that are not too expensive, or people will keep buying cheaper ones from China. Some experts suggest giving rewards not just to companies that make magnets, but also to those who buy them. Even though there are many challenges, experts say it is important for India to try to build its own rare earth magnet industry, and taking the first step is better than doing nothing.
