Porcupine Quill Sculpture Stabs Into Wheal Martyn's Art Scene!

A unique ceramic sculpture called 'Quills' has been put on display at Wheal Martyn Clay Works museum in Cornwall, marking a special moment for both the artist and the museum. The sculpture, which resembles a cluster of porcupine quills with striking white and black bands, sits atop two tables designed with a star pattern. Tim Andrews, the artist behind 'Quills,' created the piece in 2005 during his residency at the museum, drawing inspiration from fossil remains found in layers of clay silt at the site. He used a technique called 'elemental eroding' to shape the sculpture, which is made from porcelain and stoneware and finished with china clay and flint slip, materials closely tied to the region's history.

The museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, making the arrival of 'Quills' even more meaningful. Sian Powell, the exhibition officer, expressed excitement about adding the sculpture to the museum's collection, describing it as a stunning piece that connects visitors to ancient artifacts and organic forms. The sculpture stands about 3 feet tall and was donated by Imerys, the mining company that operates Wheal Martyn. Mark Hewson from Imerys noted that the china clay industry has inspired many artists over the years, and 'Quills' is a perfect example of how local materials and history can influence creative work.

'Quills' will be featured in the '50 Years of Wheal Martyn' exhibition until December 23, after which it will become a permanent part of the museum's display. The museum hopes that visitors will appreciate the connection between art, nature, and the region's industrial heritage. In addition to 'Quills,' the museum showcases other artworks, such as a large wooden fox sculpture and paintings by local artists, all of which help tell the story of Cornwall's landscape and people.
