From Drab to Fab: Students and Artist Brighten Up Daventry Subway

The Ashby Road underpass in Daventry, Northamptonshire, has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the efforts of a well-known but anonymous street artist and a group of year 10 students from Parker E-ACT Academy. This once neglected subway, which had become dull and uninviting over the years, is now bursting with vibrant colors and creative artwork. The project was organized by West Northamptonshire Council in partnership with the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, aiming to build community pride and discourage anti-social behavior.

Before the artistic work began, participants from the Immediate Justice program, run by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner's office, took on the task of preparing the underpass. They cleared away overgrown plants, removed debris, and gave the walls a fresh coat of white paint. This preparation was essential to ensure the new artwork would stand out and last longer. The council believed that by improving the appearance of the underpass, people would feel more positive about the area and be less likely to engage in negative activities.

The students, guided by their teacher Donna Thacker, each created their own pieces of art based on the theme of gallery artworks. The street artist, known as Binty Bint, contributed her own designs and shared her professional skills and techniques with the students throughout the project. The underpass had originally been painted about thirty years ago, but over time, the artwork had faded and the space had deteriorated. Now, thanks to the combined efforts of the students and Binty Bint, the subway has become a bright and welcoming environment that showcases local creativity.

Councillor Nigel Stansfield, who is responsible for environment, recycling, and waste, emphasized that the project was about much more than just creating a mural. He said it was about bringing different groups together, involving young people in a positive activity, and creating a space that the whole community can be proud of. He explained that when young people help design and create public artwork, they develop a sense of ownership and are more likely to respect and care for the space. Danielle Stone, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, added that the new art would hopefully discourage further anti-social behavior and create a space everyone can enjoy.
