Dive Into Color: Warhol, Kandinsky & More Light Up Tullie Museum

The Tullie Museum in Carlisle, Cumbria, is preparing to launch a new exhibition that explores the fascinating world of colour. The exhibition, titled 'Colour: A Season of Shades, Tints and Tones,' opens this Saturday and will run until January 25. One of the highlights of the show is Andy Warhol's famous 1967 portrait of Marilyn Monroe. The artwork is striking, with Marilyn's face painted in vivid colours: her hair is yellow with green streaks, her face is blue and green, and she wears pink eyeshadow and red lipstick. Two workers are shown carefully hanging the large framed portrait on the museum wall, making sure it is displayed perfectly for visitors to enjoy.

The exhibition is not just about looking at colourful art. It also explores how colour is connected to ideas like power and prejudice, and how the meaning of colour has changed throughout history. Visitors will see works from several well-known artists, including Wassily Kandinsky, who is famous for his abstract paintings, Roy Lichtenstein, a pop artist known for his comic book style, and Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese printmaker whose work often features bold colours. In addition to paintings and prints, the exhibition will feature colourful textile pieces by American artist Kaffe Fassett. The exhibition also includes gold jewellery from the Bronze Age, which is part of Tullie's own collection. Visitors will learn about the everyday uses of colour, from cosmetics to the famous purple of Cadbury chocolate wrappers.
