UK's 20th Century Climate? It's History as Heatwaves Take Over!

The UK's weather is changing quickly, and the climate that people knew in the 20th century is now gone, according to a new report from the Met Office. The report explains that what used to be considered extreme weather is now becoming normal. For example, the hottest day of the year in southern England is now about 4. 5 degrees Celsius warmer than it was between 1961 and 1990. This means that areas in the north of the UK are now experiencing temperatures that were once only seen in the south.

These changes are causing problems for many parts of daily life. Homes, schools, hospitals, and public transport are struggling to deal with the frequent heatwaves that have happened this summer. Many people have found it difficult to stay cool, and there have been warnings about the dangers of high temperatures. The Met Office says that the climate of the 20th century has disappeared, and we are now living in a time of historic and unprecedented change. In fact, 2025 was the warmest year on record since the Met Office began collecting data in 1884.

The report also highlights that the number of very hot days and nights in Greater London has more than quadrupled compared to the period from 1961 to 1990. There are now many more days when the temperature goes above 30 degrees Celsius and nights when it stays above 18 degrees. Other regions, such as the Vale of York and Lancashire, now have temperatures similar to what London used to experience decades ago. This shows that the warming is spreading north and even to higher areas, which means the coldest habitats are disappearing.

The effects of extreme heat have been clear this summer, with many people experiencing above-average temperatures and high humidity. Amber alerts have been issued to warn people about the dangers of heatwaves. Some people have tried to stay cool by using fans, drinking water, or finding shade under umbrellas.

Another problem is the lack of rain. In the spring of 2025, most of England and Wales received less than half the average rainfall for that time of year. England had its driest spring in over a hundred years, and the amount of water in rivers was the second lowest since 1961. Dry soil makes it harder for plants to grow, which can affect animals and birds that depend on those plants for food. It also increases the risk of wildfires and makes heatwaves feel even hotter.

The Met Office warns that climate change will likely bring more heavy rain and flooding in the winter, but summers will become hotter and drier, leading to more droughts. These changes show that the UK needs to prepare for a new kind of weather that is very different from what people were used to in the past.
