Tesla's Bold Move to Spark EV Sales in India Amid Slow Start
Tesla, the well-known electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk, is trying to change its strategy in India after seeing slow sales since its launch. The company recently opened its largest sales and service hub in Gurugram, a city in northern India. This new center combines a showroom, charging stations, and after-sales service all in one place, hoping to attract more customers. Despite Tesla's global reputation, the company has only sold just over 100 cars in India since its debut in July, according to dealership data. This is a small number compared to other luxury car brands like BMW, BYD, and Mercedes Benz, which have seen stronger sales thanks to festive demand and tax cuts.
Tesla has appointed Sharad Agarwal as its new country head in India, signaling a shift in its approach. The company is now focusing on three main strategies: increasing the adoption of electric vehicles, installing more charging stations across the country, and improving the customer experience. One of the biggest challenges Tesla faces in India is the high upfront cost of its cars, which makes them less affordable for many people. Additionally, electric vehicles make up less than 3% of all passenger vehicle sales in India, and the charging infrastructure is still developing slowly.
At the launch of the Gurugram center, Sharad Agarwal explained that buyers could save up to two million rupees on fuel and maintenance over four years, which is about a third of the price of a Tesla Model Y in India. Tesla cars can be serviced remotely through software updates, reducing the cost of ownership. Charging a Tesla at home is also much cheaper than buying petrol. Tesla is expanding its network of charging stations, including superchargers that can add about 170 miles of range in just 15 minutes. Despite these efforts, Tesla's sales in India remain low, and the company is also facing a slowdown in demand in other major markets like Europe, China, and the US. Profits fell in October, even though revenue reached a record $28 billion for the quarter. In India, Tesla has chosen to focus on importing cars rather than local manufacturing, despite government incentives to attract global electric vehicle makers. Experts believe that while Tesla's numbers are currently low, the company has potential to grow in India as the market for electric vehicles expands.
