Museum Magic: How Ironbridge Revolutionized History and Heritage

Kate Cadman is the collections curator at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust in Shropshire, and she has been working there since 1982. She feels a deep sense of pride in the museum's legacy and the impact it has had on the museum industry. The trust was established in 1967 to manage several museums that tell the story of the Industrial Revolution, a period when new machines and factories changed the world. According to Kate, the trust has played a huge role in showing that industrial history is just as important as other types of history, like castles or ancient artifacts. This was a new idea in the middle of the 20th century, and Ironbridge was one of the first places to treat industrial heritage with such respect.

The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust was also groundbreaking because it was not run by the local government or by private collectors, which was the usual way at the time. Instead, it became one of the first large independent museums, creating a new model for how museums could be managed and funded. This independence allowed the trust to try new things, like the open-air Blists Hill Victorian Town. At Blists Hill, staff dress up in Victorian clothes and interact with visitors, making history feel real and exciting. This was very different from the old style of museums, which were often quiet places with objects locked away in glass cases.

Kate remembers that the trust received a lot of support from local history groups and the Telford Development Corporation, which helped build the nearby town of Telford. Over her four decades at the museum, Kate has met many interesting people, including King Charles. However, what makes her most proud is helping young people learn new skills through programs like the Youth Training Scheme. She loves seeing them find jobs and succeed in life. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust has not only preserved history but also inspired and educated many people in Shropshire and beyond.
