In a remarkable turn of events, a couple named Sarah Worne and her husband stumbled upon a striking painting of Jesus while exploring their newly acquired barn in Cornwall. This painting, which stands at an impressive height of approximately 10 feet, depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, adorned in a flowing gown and a radiant halo. Accompanying him in the artwork are two figures believed to represent the Virgin Mary and his close friend, John. The couple purchased the property near the town of Lostwithiel in October, and upon inspecting the barn, they were taken aback to find it cluttered with around 30 pieces of plasterboard and hardboard. However, hidden within this jumble was the extraordinary painting. Sarah, who has a background as an art teacher, expressed her astonishment, stating, 'We didn't expect any real treasures, we've got a lot of rubbish in there but this was a treasure. ' The discovery of the painting was a delightful surprise for Sarah, who remarked, 'It was a surprise to be fair. We didn't expect to find that. I think it's very interesting. It's quite well painted, it's in quite good condition. ' Initially, Sarah believed that the painting bore similarities to artworks produced in Newlyn during the 1920s and 1930s, a time when many artists in that Cornish town were reviving religious themes in their work. She noted that the style of the painting closely resembled those found in St Hilary Church, located near Newlyn. After some investigation, Sarah was unable to locate any identifying marks from the artist. However, she recently discovered a faint signature on the back of the painting, which read 'Teresa Fuller 1951 - 1952. ' This revelation sparked her curiosity, as very little information is known about the artist, prompting her to reach out to the public for assistance in uncovering more details. The Reverend Sheila Bawden played a crucial role in ensuring the painting's safety by organizing its removal from the barn and relocating it to St Bartholomew's Church in Lostwithiel. The Reverend commented on the painting's unique portrayal of Jesus, stating, 'The painting shows Jesus on the cross fully dressed. Now all the paintings I have seen of him, when he's being crucified, he's been on the cross with just his loin cloth on. And also, as one of the churchwardens pointed out, he's got no beard. And Mary and John are both looking up at him. It's quite stunning, it really is. ' Despite her efforts, Sarah has yet to make contact with the previous owners of the barn to gather more information about the painting's history. She remains hopeful that she will uncover more about the artwork and the talented artist behind it.
