Protest at plan to shut 98-year-old museum

Hannah Bithell, a Labour councillor representing Kirkstall, expressed her delight at the turnout, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in the consultation process regarding the museum's future. Earlier this week, Salma Arif, the council's executive member for culture, stated that while the proposal for closure exists, 'no final decision has been made', leaving room for public opinion to influence the outcome. Dianne Riding, a former teacher who dedicated 43 years to educating students, shared her deep connection to the museum. She has taken countless pupils on trips to Abbey House, describing it as 'like traveling through time' and an experience that cannot be matched elsewhere. Riding urged the council to reconsider their decision, suggesting that with proper marketing and support, the museum could thrive and continue to serve the community. Another protester, Laura Higgott, has been visiting the museum for over 30 years with her children and grandchildren. She expressed her devastation at the thought of the museum closing, stating that it holds precious memories for her family. The community's response has been overwhelming, with more than 5,000 people signing a petition initiated by campaigner Stuart Long. Long emphasized the museum's national importance, arguing that children deserve the opportunity to learn from such a valuable resource. He called on the council to reassess the £160,000 valuation they placed on the museum and consider investing more funds to ensure its survival. Angela Harrison, another passionate campaigner, described the museum as the 'heart and soul' of Kirkstall, warning that if the collections were removed, they would likely be lost forever. In December, a spokesperson for Leeds City Council acknowledged the financial difficulties the authority is facing, stating that they need to find approximately £106 million in savings. The proposed budget cuts include fee increases, reduced staffing, and potential building closures, leading to difficult decisions for the council. The consultation period for the museum's future will remain open until January 25, allowing residents to voice their opinions and advocate for the preservation of this beloved institution.
