From Countryside to Catwalk: Rural Designer Rocks London Fashion Week

Nathan Slate, a designer from rural Somerset, made his debut at London Fashion Week, bringing a fresh perspective inspired by the English countryside. His collection, shown on September 21 at the Fashion Scout's 'ones to watch' event, was a creative commentary on environmental issues. Nathan's designs are unique because he uses materials like wool, rags, and driftwood, many of which he finds during walks in the countryside. One striking dress was made from rags dyed in shades of grey and blue, tied into knots, and paired with a large clump of white wool on the model's head, resembling a mushroom cloud. This visual was meant to symbolize the impact of humans covering nature with concrete.

Nathan runs the SL-ATE cafe and studio in Bridgwater, Somerset. He explained that being a designer from a rural area means he has to work harder to be recognized in the fashion industry, which is usually centered in big cities like London or Bristol. Despite this, he finds inspiration in the countryside and prefers to stay connected to nature. Nathan's signature technique involves leaving fabric outside for weeks, allowing it to be weathered by rain, dirt, and sunlight. This process gives his textiles a unique look and feel. He also incorporates crystals, driftwood, and even litter collected from his walks into his designs. His latest collection features motifs of clouds, ceramic accessories, and textiles dyed by rainfall, all of which have been shaped by exposure to the elements.

Nathan's approach to fashion is sustainable and aims to challenge the traditional boundaries between commerce, art, and activism. He believes designers should tell stories through their work, not just create clothes for people to buy. His collection at London Fashion Week told a story of nature, decay, and the fragility of the environment. Nathan wants fashion to be more than just about new trends; he wants it to make people think about what is being lost as nature is replaced by concrete.
