Celebrate 50 Years of London's Iconic National Theatre with Stories and Surprises!

The National Theatre, located on London's South Bank, is celebrating 50 years since it first opened its doors. The building, made of grey concrete and featuring stepped terraces, is an example of brutalist architecture. When it was first built, people had different opinions about its design. Some thought it was too plain or harsh, while others admired its bold and modern look. Over time, the National Theatre has become a well-known landmark and an important part of London's cultural scene.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the National Theatre is launching a free outdoor installation called 'Stories Start Here: 50 Stories for 50 Years. ' This installation will open in October 2026 on the Queen's Walk, right outside the theatre. The design of the installation is inspired by the amphitheatre seating in the Olivier Theatre, one of the three main auditoriums inside the building. Visitors will be able to sit and listen to stories from actors, writers, directors, designers, staff, and audience members who have been part of the theatre's history. There will also be a story station inside the theatre where people can print out stories on eco-friendly paper as a keepsake. For those who cannot visit in person, the stories will be available worldwide through the Bloomberg Connects app.

The National Theatre's construction began in 1969 and took seven years to complete. Before moving to its current home, the theatre company performed at the Old Vic for 13 years. The building was designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, a well-known architect. To honor him, the theatre is starting a new apprenticeship program in his name. This program will train people in mechanical and electrical engineering, skills needed to maintain the building. The NT Skills Centre, in partnership with Bank of America, helps train thousands of people across the UK each year. Indhu Rubasingham, the theatre's director and co-chief executive, said the building has always been a place where artists, audiences, and communities come together to share stories. The anniversary installation is being created by the design group la cuarta piel and co-curated by theatre critic Sarah Hemming. The project is supported by Arup and Sir Robert McAlpine, companies that helped build the theatre originally. The National Theatre continues to be a place where people from all backgrounds can enjoy and create theatre, making it a vital part of London's arts scene.
